More Singles Finding Love After Age 45

Oldercouple USA TODAY -- June 27 -- A USA Today analysis of Census records of Americans ages 45-55 shows that the percentage of those who said they had never been married in 2006 had doubled since 1990, and the percentage of those who were currently married had dropped by 9%. According to the most recent data from the federal Survey of Income and Program Participation, which includes marriage, 13% of those who wed in 2003 were 45 and older. Internet dating has largely made it possible for many of these later-life first marriages. Yahoo Personals reports a 33% increase from January 2006 to November 2007 among users ages 45 and over who say they have never been married. Match.com reports an increase of almost 10%. Matchmaking, The Ultimate Government Service

K_ny_times_clanku NY TIMES -- May 25 -- Next month, Justin Mei, 20, will be on his way to the Love Boat. That's the nickname for a month long cultural tour of Taiwan sponsored and partly subsidized by the Taiwanese government. The program, officially called the Expatriate Youth Summer Formosa Study Tour to Taiwan is designed to expose young people with Taiwanese roots to the motherland through courses in Mandarin, sightseeing and traditional arts. This trip has a reputation for flirtations, flings and wedding proposals. According to Census Bureau figures, the percentage of Asian women born in the US who marry Asian men has declined to 37% from 59% since 1994. The proportion of American-born Asian men who marry Asian women has also dropped, to 52% from 65%. Taglit-Birthright Israel, a program that sends young American Jews on 10-day trips to Israel, is less guarded about its romantic record. A survey conducted in 2000 and 2001 by United Jewish Communities found that American Jews who married since 1996 had an intermarriage rate of 47%. The Israeli government partly sponsors Taglit (Hebrew for "discovery"). FULL ARTICLE @ NY TIMES

Interview With Nielsen Online, Alex Burmaster

Nielsenonline_logo OPW INTERVIEW -- Apr 18 -- Nielsen Online, comScore and Hitwise are kind enough to give us the official industry rankings each month. On occasion we interview their analysts.  Alex Burmaster is the internet dating and social networking specialist for Nielsen Online. Here's the latest news and analysis from him on the market for dating and SNS. - Mark Brooks

How is the growth of the social networking industry effecting the online dating industry?
Alex Burmaster: The growth of SNing in has certainly impacted the online dating industry in the UK. Networking with friends, and friends of friends, has certainly stolen some of online dating's thunder. The sector has pretty much been declining each month over the last year. In the UK it is actually now at a level that it was back at June 2005.

Interestingly, this is not the case in the US. The personals and SNing sectors actually seem to follow the same pattern of fall/growth.

Have the top 3 dating sites extended their lead over the last couple of years?
Alex Burmaster: No, in contrast, the differences between the leading sites in terms of popularity are closer than they were a year ago – both in the EU and the US.

Do you see the market fragmenting, or consolidating?
Alex Burmaster: This is very difficult to predict and one could argue for a case both ways. Volume is the key to the success of online dating so one would think consolidation is the way to go. However, niche's are on the way back in many sectors – particularly social networking, so perhaps fragmentation will be the name of the game

Who are showing the strongest growth here and in Europe?
Alex Burmaster: Over the last year (Feb 07 – Feb 08) these are the strongest growing personals sites in the US…
Tabulka_1_3
(Nielsen Online)

…and in Europe
Tabulka_2_2
(Nielsen Online)

The four sites with no growth figure means they didn't show up amongst the most popular sites in EU in Feb 07 so their growth must have been good!!

How many people visited dating sites in the USA, and the countries that you cover in the EU, last month?
US = 25.8 million
DE = 5.6 million
FR = 4.7 million
UK = 3.6 million
IT = 2.7 million
ES = 2.3 million

For Social Networking Watch?
How are the major social networks in the USA, growing in the International markets?
Tabulka_3_5

(Nielsen Online)

Who are the standouts?
Tabulka_4
(Nielsen Online)

What social networks are showing the strongest growth potential in the EU and USA?
Alex Burmaster: We think the greatest growth potential will be niche's around a particular area of interest e.g. business (LinkedIn) music (Imeem) travel (WAYN) etc

Are niche networks undermining the larger networks?
Alex Burmaster: We are seeing a plateauing of the larger networks, which is to be expected as they hit critical mass, and we expect the niche's to grow, although they aren't necessarily the cause of the plateauing.

How many people visited social networks in the USA, and the coutries that you cover in the EU, last month?
Member communities category (social networks & blogging)
US = 104 million
UK = 18.9 million
FR = 17.6 million
IT = 15.1 million
DE = 14.6 million
ES = 11.7 million

Alexa Changes Rankings

Alexa_improvement MASHABLE -- Apr 17 -- Alexa claims "better rankings," and "improved methodology". So far, Alexa has measured rankings of web sites according to the users of their Alexa Toolbar. The Toolbar was mostly used by the tech-savvy demographic which are interested in rankings, and therefore various technology and SEO sites were unfairly well ranked. Now, the Toolbar is not the only source of data anymore, although Alexa doesn't elaborate on what exactly these other sources are. FULL ARTICLE @ MASHABLE

According to Comscore, the number of visits in December dropped by 10% to 20.2 million Americans, compared with December 2006 figures. "There are fewer people, but they're more serious," says Mark Brooks, who provides marketing and other services for online dating sites. "The revenues continue to climb because the looky-loos have gone away; they can't get much service without paying a subscription to a Web dating service."  "Paid online dating should grow from about $890 million in 2007 to an estimated $1.9 billion in 2012," says David Card, of Jupiter Research. The average monthly subscription is now $25 a month, up $20 a month from a few years ago, but more free sites might start popping up, thanks to the skyrocketing popularity of PlentyofFish. Plentyoffish.com is free and among the most visited Web sites -- not just dating sites -- in Canada and the U.S. Many so-called niche dating sites are growing, Farmersonly.com attracts those who like the agricultural way of life, while gk2gk.com appeals to self-described geeks. MyPartner.com welcomes gays and lesbians.

A Kiss-Off To Online Dating

BUSINESS WEEK -- Nov 20 -- The era of Web 1.0 is over, online dating is dead. Going on sites like Facebook or MySpace it's like going to a bar with your friends, whereas a dating site is like walking past a bunch of animals in cages at the zoo. According to comScore, the number of people visiting online dating sites dropped 6% in September. Unique visitors to Yahoo Personals and eHarmony fell 21%, Match.com had a 16% drop, and True.com's visitors plummeted 46%. ComScore does show some names like Plentyoffish.com growing, but these are new sites with far smaller user bases. I doubt PlentyofFish will ever get to the size or valuation of a Match.com. Net Scams Not Slowing Down

Worse, the FTC estimates only 10% of fraud victims actually report.  The most prevalent is general merchandise fraud (goods not delivered) followed by auction fraud and then by fake-check scams. (A victim is sent a very real looking cashier's check that bounces a week later.)  Another scam, Love Schemes, takes advantage of lonely people on dating sites. Internet Dating On The Rise In India

Virtual Intimacy Leads To Real Carelessness

Onlinedatingwoman1THE HOUSTON CHRONICLE -- Sep 5 -- A recent study of 740 women with online dating ads showed that the women exercised great caution when communicating with strangers and meeting them for the first time. However, for the 568 women who did finally meet their dates, 30% reported having sex on the first date and 77% of those didn't use condoms. Among the general population, condom use with a new partner is more common. Why are online daters less careful? Mark Brooks, editor of OnlinePersonalsWatch.com, said people hoping for romantic relationships sometimes project what they're looking for onto virtual mates they may not know much about. He called it the "halo syndrome". "It can be pretty high emotion and high passion on that first meeting", he said.

Mark Brooks, the editor of OnlinePersonalsWatch.com, which covers news about the business of online dating, said people hoping for romantic relationships sometimes project what they're looking for onto virtual mates they may not know much about. Online Dating Statistics

Online_daterSAN ANGELO LIVE! -- Aug 5 -- There are several reports out there that confirm what we already know – online dating is big business. In 2004, dating websites created more revenue ($470 million) than any other paid online content category. 11% of all American Internet-using adults (16 million) have gone to an online dating site. In general, online daters tend to be younger (26-35), more educated, and more liberal than their counterparts. Online daters also are either skinnier, taller, and more attractive than the general population, or better liars. Although online daters seem pickier when it comes to looks (a woman with a supermodel BMI of 17 receives 90% more first-contact emails than a woman with a healthy BMI of 25), 3% of the Internet users who are married or in long-term committed relationships (3 million) say they met their partners online. The Many Faces Of Online Dating

ComscoreTECHNEWSWORLD -- August 2 -- The U.S. online dating market will reach $932 million in 2011, according to JupiterResearch. More than 20 million Internet users visited such a site last December, reported comScore, with the top destinations being Yahoo! Personals, Match.com, True.com, Spark Networks and Singlesnet.com. But, mainstream dating site memberships are stagnating or, in some cases, shrinking. The proportion of paying customers (5%) has stayed the same over the last five years, according to Jupiter. Furthermore, only 10% of Internet users visited an online dating site in 2006 -- a decrease from 16% in 2005 and 21% in 2002. Specialized dating sites, as a result, are increasing in numbers. It is speculated, though, they they too must keep evolving to prevent stagnation. FULL ARTICLE @ TECH NEWS WORLD

China Consumer Survey

China_surveyMARKET WIRE -- July 25 -- The Chinese economy is hot. Their stock market is up over 43% since March. There are over 380 million consumers in China between the ages of 18 and 34. These consumers prefer Chinese goods over American or Japanese goods. They are also more likely to research products via the internet and to surf, email, blog or IM according to a BIGresearch survey. FULL ARTICLE @ MARKET WIRE

Mark Brooks: I just spent two months in China. Once people start using and trusting credit cards, and the online ad market matures, the Chinese internet dating market will dwarf the USA market.  However, for now the Chinese don't trust the internet, don't use credit cards (they use debit cards which don't allow monthly recurring charges), and ad buys aren't tracked on a CPM/CPC/CPA basis.

Seeking Mr. Right Gets Tougher

ActorsCANADIAN PRESS -- July 17 -- May to December romances, such as the one between Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore, could be the answer to the growing sex ratio imbalance in Canada.
