How To Find A Millionaire (Or Billionaire) Mate

Man_with_flowers DAILY STAR -- Feb 28 -- The find-a-rich-guy sites insist they provide a valuable service to wealthy people who are too busy running businesses to hang out at bars, clubs and other social venues. "It's very convenient to sit in your office and look through a catalogue of women on your computer. It's also cheaper than traditional matchmakers", says Steven Pasternack, CEO of Sugardaddie.com. In addition to millionaire dating sites, myriad other niche sites abound. Spark Networks operates 30 special-interest dating sites, including JDate.com, BlackSingles.com and ChristianMingle.com. While Match.com and eHarmony are two of the most popular dating sites in the U.S., China's QQ.com Love is the No. 1 ranked dating site in Asia. Meetic.com and be2 are No. 1 and 2 in Europe, and Amigos.com is second only to MSN in Latin America, according to comScore. The number of U.S. visitors to dating sites has fallen steadily from a peak of 21% of all Internet users in 2003 to 10% in 2006, according to JupiterResearch. Despite the drop, the revenues rose 10% to $659 million in 2006, and Jupiter forecast a compound annual growth rate of 8% through 2011. FULL ARTICLE @ DAILY STAR

Mark Brooks: This article also mentions sayheyhey.com, a dating site that uses videos as profiles. Great idea. Jupiter says $889 million of revenue was generated in the USA on internet dating services in 2007 and that will rise to $1.9 Billion in 2012. Not too shabby. Beat that, social networking industry!

BostonNOW: What advice do you have for others starting a business?
Sam Yagan: One of the key drivers to my success is picking really great business partners. You also have to be 100 % passionate about it.

BN: What do you wish you had known before you started your business?
SY: Human resources really are the most important thing you have, so I wish I'd spent more time recruiting and developing the crew that we had.

BN: What's the biggest mistake you made in getting your business going?
SY: I think early on we didn't spend enough time differentiating ourselves from the competition. I spent too much time on the concept of "free". It's not about just being free, it's about being free and better.

Online Dating Firms Split Over Screening

True_logo ASSOCIATED PRESS -- Feb 17 -- New Jersey became the first state to enact a law requiring the sites to disclose whether they perform background checks. True.com already does such screenings.

"If we were to clean up, there's hordes of offline singles who'd come online to find their soul mate." Matchmaker To Millions

Enraghtmoony1 FORBES -- Feb 14 -- There are about 92 million singles the U.S., says Match.com CEO Thomas Enraght-Moony. Match.com is an online dating leader, with networks in 37 different countries and with roughly 15 million users. Enraght-Moony talked to Forbes.com about why online dating is now widely accepted.

Q: Are the people who use the service in the U.S. much younger or older than in other markets?
A: Our sweet spot is people in their late 20s into their mid to late 30s. The 50-plus is our fastest-growing segment.

Q: Who do you worry about the most? eHarmony.com? Singlesnet.com?
A: This is just a short list of people that I worry about. We're in 37 different markets, and every market that we're in there's a list of competitors.

Q: How is the money made in your business? Is it all subscription-based revenue?
A: We're about 95% in subscription revenues. Last year, we did $349 million in revenue and $78 million in profit, which is up about 24% over the prior year.

Q: Are people finally comfortable with saying they use online dating services like Match?
A: I think people on Match today are very comfortable talking about it. It's a big change from 12 years ago, and that's part of the success we've had.

Q: Have the social networks hurt business?
A: Those services are great for keeping in contact with the people they already know. But, if they want to expand their possibilities or are interested in meeting people outside their social circle, they come back to Match. Late last year, we launched an application for Facebook. It's called Little Black Book at Match.com.

Q: What's the next big offering in terms of technology or expansion?
A: We're rolling out a mobile platform, we're figuring out how to work with Facebook and MySpace.

How To Survive Valentine's Day

Askdanandjennifer_logo MERCURY NEWS -- Feb 10 -- On Valentine's Day couples long for the perfect evening, singles just wish it was Feb. 15. Too much emphasis is placed on this one day, says Jennifer Hunt, who with "life partner" Dan Baritchi operates the Dallas-based Ask Dan and Jennifer dating and relationship site. "Such pressures can make many Valentine's Day gifts and gestures seem forced and obligatory." Here are a few tips to make this the best Anti-Valentine's Day ever:
• Exchange flowers with friends
• Instead of wishing it was you getting a box of chocolates, buy yourself the most decadent, pricey sweets around
• Hold a singles party
• Grab that decadent meal on any day other than Feb. 14.
• Make an online dating profile.

"There's a lot of people looking for love, look around; you tell me -- how good are profiles these days,"said Evan Marc Katz, dating expert and author of "I Can't Believe I'm Buying This Book: A Commonsense Guide to Successful Internet Dating." Katz has written some 500 profiles for clients on his online profile writing service, E-Cyrano. Old photos are the #1 shortcoming of profiles. Another piece of advice is to drop the bad vibes. "Most of all, be honest", said Thomas Enraght-Moony, CEO of Match.com. FULL ARTICLE @ CANADA.COM

Mark Brooks: Dating sites are selling people to people, so if your people look better, you just improved your product. Dating sites should offer LookBetterOnline to users.  LBOL also offers a nice rev share. The conversions/revenue stream from LBOL probably won't justify the real estate on your site, but if 3% of your users get professional photos made up, then you just improved the look of your service. That's a differentiator these days. People still put up dated, inaccurate, bad photos in many cases.

Casual Dating Affiliate Payouts Top The Industry

Money1_2 OPW -- Feb 15 -- Does anyone know of any dating affiliate programs that pay out higher than casual dating sites?  The super fast growing dating sites Fling and SexSearch are topping my research on payouts. SexSearch is paying out $90 and Fling $50 per paid sign up over Valentines. Adultfriendfinder is definitely feeling the heat on its tail from these two. I'm surprised how many dating sites don't have affiliate programs. Match, eHarmony, Perfectmatch and Yahoo! have good programs, but many top and second tier players have relatively small programs, if they have them at all. From the affiliate perspective adult dating sites just plain convert better, which would partly explain the rise in popularity of casual dating sites over the last few years. CJ, Linkshare, Azoogleads, Shareasale, Primary Ads, and Link Connector all drive significant amounts of traffic to dating sites.  CJ seems to have the most offers. Gay Matchmaking Sites Find A Growing Market

Mypartner SF CHRONICLE -- Feb 14 -- After eHarmony said its psychological research is based exclusively on heterosexual relationships, a growing number of rival online matchmakers are using their algorithms to find same-sex love as well. "There are just not enough services for creating healthy relationships, and it is a major gap in the gay community," said matchmaker Patrick Perrine, founder MyPartner.com, which caters to "sophisticated, cultured and relationship-oriented gay men. "There has been a long-held stereotype that gay people are only looking to hook up." Matchmakers like Chemistry.com, which estimates that about 10% of its 3.7 million clients are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender, say all love is equal, straight or gay. The matchmakers claim "you can actually find people who are compatible, and this is a major advance that is going to keep the industry alive for the upcoming 50 years," said Mark Brooks, an Internet dating and social networking consultant. Headhunters For The Heart

Untitled USA TODAY -- Feb 12 -- Matchmakers seem to be popping up all over the country, many targeting their personalized services to eligible businessmen. Matchmaking has become such a buzzword that some dating websites use it in their marketing. In December, Match.com unveiled Match My Friends, which allows friends and family to play matchmaker. Engage.com came up with that premise when it launched in 2005. Matchmaking as a field also has grown since the 2003 opening of the Manhattan-based Matchmaking Institute, which sells a home study kit for $1,500. LaRosa's research suggests there are about 1,600 matchmakers in the USA, and about 100 are added each year. It is a very difficult business because matchmakers are dealing with emotional currency and extreme expectations. FULL ARTICLE @ USA TODAY

Starting Up: The Business Of Love

Online_dating_nove SM SMALL BIZ -- Feb 13 -- Making a bundle in the dating industry, isn't easy for a small player competing against Yahoo! Personals, Match.com and eHarmony. At PlentyofFish, which now ranks among the top 10 dating sites in the U.S. for unique visitors, Frind's strategy was simple. "I undercut them on price," he says. When it comes to the business of love, newbie entrepreneurs need to figure out a way to stand out in a crowded marketplace. Here's how:

- Find a Niche
- Undercut the Competition
- Add Value
- Innovate

More narrowly focused niches have begun to surface. i.e. golfmates.com and vegetariandating.com. The best niche businesses are usually started by entrepreneurs who have a deep understanding of the community they want to serve. i.e. Patrick H. Perrine, a psychologist who spent years studying human sexuality and dating preferences, launched a gay male matchmaking service in San Francisco in 2004, and then expanded the service online - myPartner.com — to a national audience last year.
